Cost of Attendance Definitions

  • Direct costs – costs paid directly to UT Dallas, which include tuition and fees as well as housing and meal plan charges if you live on campus.
  • Indirect costs – educational costs not paid directly to UT Dallas. These may include books, transportation, off-campus housing, and other personal expenses.
  • Tuition and fees – estimated charges you will pay for your classes and instruction.
  • Books and supplies – average cost of books and supplies for a typical student.
  • Food – a reasonable estimate of the cost of 3 meals per day, 7 days per week, for 16 weeks per semester.
  • Housing – a reasonable estimate of what it will cost to live on campus, off campus, or at home with parent(s) while attending school.
  • Transportation – average cost of travel to and from the student’s home and transportation costs between class and work.
  • Personal – average cost of personal items not included in housing and food expenses.
  • Federal student loan fees – average cost of any Federal student loan fee, origination fee, or insurance premium charged to the student or the parent of the student. Non-Federal loan fees may not be included.
  • Dependent care – an allowance based on the expenses incurred for dependent care, based on the number and age of such dependents.
  • Disability-related expenses – an allowance for expenses associated with a student’s disability, including special services, personal assistance, transportation, equipment, and supplies that are reasonably incurred and not provided for by other agencies.
  • Study abroad expenses – an allowance for reasonable costs, as determined by the institution, for a student in an approved for credit UTD study abroad program.
